Privacy Commissioners of Alberta, British Columbia, and Canada Cooperate

November 21st, 2008

A memorandum of understanding has been created by the Privacy Commissioners of Alberta, British Columbia and Canada in an attempt to align their resources, knowledge, and practices more closely together.

This is certainly exciting news for privacy officers, especially those who have experienced the difficulties of dealing with privacy matters that bleed across different jurisdictions.

The major objectives of the memorandum are to leverage resources and reduce jurisdictional overlaps, increase knowledge sharing and transfer by coordination, and collectively carry out instructions that are jointly made by the Privacy Commissioners.

In addition, they will seek ways to collectively enforce privacy matters, identify and institute similar policies, consult together on compliance guides and public education training, and share information across offices.
