Canada’s Anti-Spam Act: Bill S-202

December 11th, 2008

The Epoch Times has an interesting article about Canada’s Bill S-202 which has just received its second reading before Parliament. Bill S-202 — known as the Anti-Spam Act — will finally bring Canada up to par with all other G8 countries which already have anti-spam laws.

Spamhaus.org reports that the majority of spam originates from the US and is much likely due to the average Joe’s computer being infected with software which causes it relay spam.

Most spam efforts are also coordinated and based outside of North America where spam laws are either non-existent, difficult to enforce, or not enforced at all. For example, out of the top 10 spammers, five originate in Russia/Ukraine.

Besides that point, Canada needs it’s own anti-spam legislation; spamming in Canada is currently legal, providing it does not violate other pieces of legislation such as PIPEDA. If this bill receives royal assent, it should have its greatest effect on legitimate or otherwise dishonest Canadian businesses who use unsolicited messages to promote their products and services.
